Event at Solent Sky Museum:
“Southampton and the People’s Spitfire”
The prototype Supermarine Spitfire first flew from Southampton Airport in 1936, and Solent Sky Museum will be hosting a special 80th anniversary event on 5 March 2016 entitled Southampton and the People’s Spitfire.
The event will focus on the bombing raids which Southampton suffered during the Second World War as the Luftwaffe attempted to destroy the city’s Spitfire production facilities.
Veterans of Southampton’s Blitz have been invited to attend the museum to have their memories of this time recorded. The event will begin with a presentation at the museum at 10:30.
After the presentation, an exhibition of over one hundred photographs will be opened, displaying Southampton’s suffering during the Blitz and the struggle to maintain Spitfire production in the face of continuing attacks by German bombers. This exhibition will open to the public at 12:30 on 5 March and will last for six months.
For more information, or if you wish to receive a press invitation to this event, please call Solent Sky Museum on (023) 80635 830 or email [email protected].
